Fonts and Kerning?

What is kerning? Kerning is used to take up or add space between letters.  Using more or less space can change the feel of your copy.

To add more space between letters open your type palette in Photoshop and while highlighting the letters using the Text tool adjust the spacing from 1 up.

Example of 0% kerning and 200%. You can also adjust the width or height of type here by changing from 100% up or down.

You can also stretch the type up or down using transform but if you use the text palette instead of the transform palette you can match your type and spacing consistently throughtout your page.

You can also add extra space between words and paragraphs using the Paragraph option to the right of Character shown above. Select Options and Justification.

How to create a Gold Gradient in Photoshop.

Create a new page, any size, any color, unlock the layer so that you can add the new gradient. Choose the metals and copy one so that you can write over it. The 1st color at the 0% position is R-166 G127 B=80; 25% position R=198 G=164 B=111; 50% position R=220 G=189 B=133; 75% position R=235 G=201 B=123; 100% position R=185 G=147 B=90.

How to make a pattern using Photoshop

Step 1: Create a new document (either transparent of filled with white). For this example the background will be filled with white, RGB and 300 dpi 3"x3".

Step 2: To make the pattern I will use the preset shapes that come with Photoshop. For this example I will be using fill pixels set to 60% opacity. Using the shape of a heart pick a color from the swatches and start drawing them into your document. Keep your hearts on the inside of your document.

Example 1:

Above: hearts placed randomly inside a box.

Step 3: Once you have placed your hearts inside your box, you will choose Offset Filter. This is located under Filter/Other/Offset. Move your sliders around so that it looks good for you.

Example 2:

When you turn the above hearts into a pattern you will notice that there is a lot of space around the edges that does not look good. See below.

Example 3:

Step 4. After experimenting with a few of these, I discovered that if you take the pattern once it has been offset and fill in some more hearts (make sure you don't go outside the edge of your box) you will not get an invisible outline that shows up once you make the pattern. Below is example 2 with more hearts filled in.

Example 4.

Step 5: Under Edit, select Define Pattern. Do a select all and add this to your patterns. Your final pattern will fill in like below.
