Working With Patterns as TextureThis tutorial is made using Photoshop CS 1. If your program does not support these features you may need to use different steps.
Step 1. Download the rose pattern above.
Step 2: Save the pattern under define patterns. Shown above. Close the file. If you are a saver you can keep it as a PSD or PNG, but it is now part of your patterns. *Note: if you decide to change the patterns (under layers) you will be asked to save before replacing with other patterns. If you don’t save your pattern then your new ones will be gone so it’s a good idea to keep the original. Step 3: Open a NEW document with a WHITE Background.
Step 4: Click on Background so that it now says Layer 0.
Step 5: Go to Layer Style / Pattern OverlayUnder Pattern Overlay choose the pattern you just added. Adjust the size to 100. Say ok. Go back to the Layer Palette and flatten the image.
Choose the Background again and unlock the Layer - it will now say Layer 0.
Step 6: Use the magic wand tool (circled in red above)
Set the Tolerance 32, Check Anti-aliased, Check Contiguous, uncheck Layers if you have more than 1.
Place your cursor in a white spot and click. The magic wand will pick everything that is white. Now select delete and everything that was white will now be transparent.
Open a background texture like the sample above. Drag the pattern that you just created and place over the textured background.
Open the Curves Palette. The bar should have white on the top and on the right. If it doesn’t click the middle bar to reverse the direction. Next pull the slider from the bottom to the top until your pattern turns completely white.
Change the Layer Palette above from Normal to Darken over the green.instead of seeing a white pattern over the top you will see nothing. Don’t worry this is okay. Open the Layer Style Palette and go to Bevel and Emboss. Change the Dark Bevel color to a shade of dark green. Next go to the Drop Shadow and change the color to a dark green and reduce the opacity so that the shadow is lighter. Next just take your mouse over to your art and pull the shadow far enough down so that it looks like the pattern is sitting on top.
Once this is done you will have a pattern that will look similar to the above. |
